Matching Bridesmaid Dresses to Figures

Brides come in many figures, and often so do their bridesmaids. Choosing a dress that flatters all the bridesmaids can be challenging, especially if there is variety in the bridal party figures. Some styles flatter one body type while doing the opposite for other body types. This can be disheartening for brides, as well as bridesmaids. Here are a few tips about selecting bridesmaid dresses that work well for your bridesmaids based on their figures.

shealth style bridesmaid dresses
If all of your bridesmaids are fairly close to the same size and figure, a sheath style dress can work. This works well for voluptuous bridesmaids, as well as for those with less curvy figures. It is important to note, however, that plus-size bridesmaids may be uncomfortable wearing a sheath style bridesmaid dress.
ball gown style bridesmaid dresses
Likewise, a ball gown works best if the bridesmaids are close to the same size and build. Ball gown style bridesmaid dresses accentuate differences, making small attendants look small while at the same time creating the illusion that the larger bridesmaids are bigger than they are. If all of the maids have nearly the same size, however, it can create a very attractive bridal party. This type of gown works especially well for bridesmaids who have a fuller bust.
A-line or princess style bridesmaid dresses

Bridesmaid dresses done in an A-line or princess style complement a wide variety of sizes and figures. This style comes in slightly at the waist and then flares out gently as it falls toward the floor. As it does not come in definitively at the waist, as a ball gown dress does, figure flaws can be smoothed over. This dress works for pregnant bridesmaids in the first and second trimesters , but is not recommended for those in the third trimester.

empire style bridesmaid dresses

Finally, bridesmaid dresses with an empire waist are practically universal. The dress flows outward slightly, beginning just below the bust line. This creates an almost across-the-board attractive look. If you have a pregnant bridesmaid in her third trimester, as well as a variety of sizes to fit, an empire style dress may be just the ticket.

Choosing a style of bridesmaid dress that complements all of your bridesmaids will add to the overall aestheticism of the wedding party, creating a feeling of continuity. And your bridesmaids will be happy that they look their best too!
